I love Canada Day and every year, whether it’s celebrating Canada 150 (like last year)… or Canada’s 151st birthday it’s for a cause for celebration. Every year we gather up the whole gang for a big Canada Day celebration. We swim in the pool, eat and drink potluck fare and celebrate how proud we all are to be Canadians (and this family is proud let me tell you!). We’ll end the festivities with all of the little ones laying on blankets, watching the fireworks display in our local park with the rest of the community. Guys, we are so fortunate to live where we live.
I love having dishes for celebrations like this that are festive and delicious but also really easy. I’m pretty much over all of those family get-togethers where I’m the one stuck in the kitchen for most of the day. Even though I love cooking and baking for my guests, our family has grown so much that I really just look forward to having everyone around and spending time reconnecting and catching up. I know that some of the usual pot luck desserts will make an appearance but I also want something that is a little more fun and festive for the kids and adults alike.
I’m asking you friends, what could be more fun than a patriotic display of red and white donuts?
I did a test batch with my own crew last week and we had a blast. Making donuts is often a week-end treat around here because there’s truly nothing better than a freshly made donut on a Sunday morning. Donuts that come out of the fryer are so soft and pillow-y, I wasn’t sure how I would feel about the oven baked variety (I don’t even own donut pans so I had to borrow some!). I thought for the party I would try baked donuts just for ease of time and preparation and I’m so glad I did a test batch first. The donut recipe itself is just a simple cake donut batter that I’ve taken over the top with the addition of tangy buttermilk, dark cocoa powder and just a smidge of hot coffee. The end result was a super moist and tender, chocolate-y rich cake donut that is almost hard to believe was done in the oven. I’m completely hooked! Instead of a sugar glaze, I melted some red and white candy melts and let the kids dip and drizzle to their heart’s content. A tiny sprinkle of some patriotic maple leaf confetti and sliver stars and I think we found ourselves a Canada Day party winner!
Guys, did I mention that this batter is made in one bowl and there’s no sifting or creaming at all? Just mix it all up, portion and bake. Also, for all of you donut lovers out there (me!, me!), the batter is enough for a fairly large batch and will make 18 people very, very happy.
Speaking of happy, I’m pretty proud of this country. We’ve accomplished some pretty amazing things. I can’t wait to see what’s next!

Baked Dark Chocolate Buttermilk Donuts Recipe
*recipe yields 18 regular sized donuts
For the donuts:
- 1 1/2 cups cake flour
- 1 cup sugar
- 1/2 cup dark cocoa, (I use Cocao Barry, Extra Brute)
- 1 tsp baking soda
- 1/4 tsp baking powder
- 1/4 tsp salt
- 1 tsp vanilla extract
- 2 large eggs
- 1/2 cup buttermilk
- 1/4 cup canola oil
- 1/4 cup hot strong coffee
For the glaze:
- 2 1/2 cups candy melts (we used 1 1/2 cups of white and 1 cup of red)
- 1 tsp shortening, divided
- 1 cup maple leaf confetti
- 1/4 cup edible silver stars
- Preheat oven to 375° and lightly spray donut pans with baking spray ( I used 3 pans with 6 donuts on each)
- Combine the flour, sugar, cocoa powder, baking soda, baking powder and salt in the bowl of a stand mixer. Mix on low speed for one minute just to combine.
- Add the eggs and all of the remaining liquid ingredients and mix just until combined. Turn the mixer to medium speed and beat for one minute.
- Portion the batter out into the donut pans (a piping bag or Ziploc bag with the corner cut off makes this very easy!), filling each cavity 2/3 full. There is enough batter for 18 donuts total.
- Bake for 8-10 minutes, checking at the 8 minute mark for doneness. Donuts will spring back when touched. Be careful not to over bake.
- While the donuts are baking, melt the white and red candy melts each with 1/2 tsp of shortening, in their own glass bowl, by heating in the microwave for 30 second increments at a time. Stir each colour until fully melted and smooth.
- Remove the warm donuts to a wire rack. Dip all of the warm donuts in the white candy chocolate first, just enough to glaze the top. After completing the white layer, use a spoon and go back and drizzle over the top of all of the donuts with the melted red chocolate. Immediately sprinkle with the maple leaf confetti and edible silver stars. Allow the donut glaze to set and serve.
- Keep any leftover donuts in a container at room temperature.
